1 Amartya Sen

The Indian economist and philosopher turned 80 last year, but remains an intellectual force. The global impact of his latest book An Uncertain Glory: India and its Contradictions is highlighted by his triumph in this year’s vote (last year he was seventh). Currently a professor at Harvard, he won a Nobel Prize in 1998 for his work in welfare economics.

He has been awarded over 100 honorary degrees and is known in his native India as the “Mother Theresa of economics.” The author of Prospect’s first cover story in 1995, Sen continues to write influential essays, including this month’s lead essay, and has dedicated his life to combatting poverty with analysis rather than activism.



2 Raghuram Rajan

As the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Rajan has one of the hardest jobs in global economics. He took charge of his country’s central bank last September, as India faced its worst economic crisis for over two decades. The former chief economist of the International Monetary Fund, he is a distinguished academic and the author of the prize-winning book Fault Lines: How Hidden Fractures Still Threaten the World Economy. Rajan gained fame after predicting the 2008 financial crisis in a paper delivered to a meeting of central bankers in the US in 2005. From the outset he has made his strategy clear, introducing a series of emergency interest rate rises to rescue the rupee and boost economic growth.



3 Arundhati Roy

One of India’s most famous authors—and fiercest critics—Arundhati Roy won the Man Booker Prize in 1997 with her debut novel, The God of Small Things. Since then, she has focused on non-fiction writing and radical political activism, covering subjects such as climate change, gender equality, the perils of free-market development in India and poverty. Her latest work, Capitalism: A Ghost Story, examines the dark side of democracy in contemporary India, arguing that globalised capitalism has intensified the wealth divide, racism and environmental degradation. “This new election is going to be [about] who the corporates choose,” Roy says, “[about] who is not going to blink about deploying the Indian army against the poorest people in this country, and pushing them out to give over those lands, those rivers, those mountains, to the major mining corporations.”

4 Mao Yushi

Hailed as a “national treasure” by his fans, Mao Yushi, 85, is one of China’s leading economists and an outspoken advocate of wide-ranging policy reform. Highly critical of the neo-Maoist left, he angered some in China with his 2011 essay, “Returning Mao Zedong to Human Form,” which enumerates the human cost of the Communist Party leader’s brutal policies from 1949 to 1976. The article led to popular clamour for his imprisonment and execution, with tens of thousands signing a petition demanding his imprisonment on charges of treason. However, the global impact of his work was recognised when he was awarded the Cato Institute’s 2012 Milton Friedman Prize. He is also the author of 18 non-fiction works including the bestselling Economics in Everyday Life, which aims to provide an accessible explanation of market economics for the Chinese people.


5 Pope Francis

Since Pope Francis succeeded Benedict XVI as the 266th head of the Roman Catholic Church in March 2013, he has shown himself to be an unusually bold leader. His achievements so far include reorientating the Church’s concerns towards economic inequality, working to “intensify dialogues” with other faiths and encouraging less punitive attitudes towards sexual morality.

He has just published his first book, The Church of Mercy: My Vision for the Church, a collection of essays and speeches. For many, the most striking evidence of his commitment to inclusivity came during an impromptu press conference on a flight back from Brazil in July 2013. “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?” he asked.



6 Kaushik Basu

This Indian economist is currently serving as the Senior Vice President and Chief Economist at the World Bank. A respected academic, he has published widely on development economics, game theory and welfare economics. His most significant work, Beyond the Invisible Hand: Groundwork for a New Economics, argues that by ignoring the role of culture and custom, traditional economics promotes the view that the current system is the only viable option. “The free market proposition is a powerful intellectual achievement and one of great aesthetic appeal,” Basu writes. “But its rampant misuse has had huge implications for the world—in particular, in the way we craft policy, think about globalisation, and dismiss dissent.”



7 Mary Beard

Mary Beard is a professor of classics at the University of Cambridge and one of Britain’s best-known broadcasters. Beard writes widely on historical and political issues, and over recent months has lectured at the British Museum on the public voice of women, written about the future of the Parthenon and the philosopher Bernard Williams. Her latest essay collection, Confronting the Classics, aims to answer that age-old question: why do we study the works of Greek and Roman antiquity? A strong advocate of the discursive power of social media, she is a prolific blogger and has racked up over 62,000 Twitter followers.


8 Peter Higgs

The predictor of the Higgs Boson (the particle that gives mass to other fundamental particles), this pioneering physicist was the winner, in 2013, of the Nobel Prize in physics. Higgs first floated the idea that subatomic particles gained mass by way of an as-yet-undiscovered particle (or field) in 1964. Five decades later, in 2012, researchers proved the existence of the boson at Cern, the European research facility. Famously publicity-shy, Higgs caused an unprecedented delay in the announcement of his Nobel Prize, as the committee struggled to contact the scientist to inform him of his win.



9 Ha-Joon Chang

Ha-Joon Chang is a South Korean economist. He teaches development economics at Cambridge and is known for his criticism of free-market fundamentalism and western development policy. His new book, Economics: The User’s Guide, is an introduction to economics which explains how the global economy works and why anyone can understand it. It is also a rejection of the view, held by many of his colleagues, that economics could ever be a science in the way that physics or chemistry are.

His previous work was the bestselling 23 Things They Don’t Tell You About Capitalism (2010), which Michael Lind reviewed in Prospect: “While the guild of academic economists may continue to ignore maverick thinkers like Chang, the future of the world economy may depend on whether the rest of us pay attention.”


10 Daniel Kahneman

Although he is not an economist, Kahneman is often credited, along with the cognitive psychologist Amos Tversky, with inventing the discipline of behavioural economics, which challenges the idea, central to much economic theory, that “people are generally rational.” His 2011 book Thinking, Fast and Slow, in which he argued that human cognitive processes consist of two distinct systems (one “fast” and one “slow”), was a bestseller and was met with critical acclaim. Nassim Nicholas Taleb described it as “a landmark book in social thought, in the same league as The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith and The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud.” Kahneman won the Nobel Prize in economics in 2002.

Cannibal Cult Using Dead People As Beds
              An extreme group of CANNIBALS who use dead bodies as beds are growing as people flock to join the bizarre order.

             The Aghori cannibals - who live by the Ganges River in northern India - also smear themselves with the ash from cremated bodies and drink from skulls.

            The group are feared by locals despite only eating the flesh of people who are already dead.

            Intrepid Irish photographer Darragh Mason, 37, spent time with the group - who are growing despite practicing celibacy.

           Darragh said: "They are known to pull bodies from the Ganges and eat them.

         "Skulls and other human bones are taken from the cremation grounds and used for ritual purposes. They believe that power comes from the dead.

           "At one point they tried to get me to drink water from the Ganges out of a human skull but around two metres upstream they were cremating bodies so I just couldn't - the river is teaming with disease anyway."

           Darragh said people were 'attracted' to the extreme sect's way of life.

           He said: "There was an American gentleman who lived with the group for sometime. Amazingly people are really attracted to this way of life.

            "They actively try to be thought of as the lowest in society which is why they do not dress well and their hair is often matted."

               Despite their terrifying reputation the Aghori are charitable and have set up a leper colony where they have cared for and cured 99,045 patients with full leprosy and 147,503 with partial leprosy.

It was dreamed up by Lizzie Durley, 21, who is studying international event management at Brighton University.

'I got the idea from Jim Carrey's office scene in Yes Man,' she says.

'I was having a bad day and remembered that scene from the film which really tickled me.

'I figured people were getting bored of the whole 'selfie' craze - I know I was.

'So I just applied the concepts of the selfie to this idea and it resulted in Sellotape selfies!'

Miss Durley presented the idea to her friends who shared it online.

Before she knew it, it was all over the internet.

'It grew so quickly,' she says.

'The concept is applicable to literally anyone, everyone can join in, there's no risk of offence, and people just love to have a giggle.

'So it blew up on Facebook.'

Miss Durley says her 'goal' was 3,000 followers on the Facebook page.

'I thought even that was adventurous,' she says.

'But five hours later it was on about 18,000 and by the evening, at which point we couldn't really believe how popular it was, it was at 50,000.'

This Cambodian tuk-tuk driver is enjoying what people in his country believe is a heart-healthy drink with aphrodisiac powers: a tarantula cocktail. That’s right, it’s a noxious mixture of rice wine, jack fruit, and spider entrails, with the spider being alive until he ends up in the glass. Mmm, tasty!

Tim Whitby captured the drink, as well as the driver. Cambodia has had a vigorous spider-food trade since the 70’s, but it’s only recently that mystified Westerners are getting a chance to join the locals on spider-hunting tours and try the snacks (either in drink form or fried) alongside the friendly locals. Would you try the local dish of choice?

As for me, I, uh… I think I’ll pass, thanks. My heart and libido are healthy enough; I don’t need to make things worse by consuming a pulpy mass of spider entrails.

Kutti said: 'The graveyard brings good luck. Our business has been flourishing because of these graves. It gives people a unique experience.
'We have maintained the graves as they were. Our customers don't seem to mind.'
However, the owner has little idea who the graves belong to, while some locals claim they contain the remains of followers of a 16th-Century Sufi saint, whose tomb lies nearby.
Around a dozen graves lay inside the restaurant and have been sealed off by iron grills.
Every morning, when the shutters of the restaurant are pulled up, waiters spend some time wiping the gravestones and decorating them with fresh flowers.
'We begin our day by paying respects to the graves.
'We wipe them and cover them with cloth and also shower flowers on them.
'It is important to respect the dead,' said Kutti.

Giant tobacco plants that stay young forever

              The life of tobacco plants is short. They grow for around three to four months, followed by flowering and then die. Their size is also limited, with plants only growing to about one-and-a-half to two meters tall. Now, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology IME in Münster have located the tobacco plant’s very own fountain of youth, which means they can keep it forever young. The Münster-based researchers discovered a genetic switch which can prevent the plants from change blooming to flowering. This also averts the plants’ early change demise to senescence – and suppresses the factor that halts growth. “The first of our tobacco plants is now almost eight years old but it still just keeps on growing and growing,” says Professor Dirk Prüfer, head of the Department of Functional and Applied Genomics at the IME. “Although we regularly cut it, it’s six-and-a-half meters tall. If our greenhouse were a bit higher, it would probably be even bigger. Its stem is already ten centimeters in diameter.” Whereas in normal tobacco plants the leaves, which grow from the bottom of the stem, soon turn yellow and drop off, the IME plant’s leaves stay healthy and green. This is why the scientists have christened their modified plant species “forever young”.

But what exactly do researchers do to give the plants eternal youth and make them capable of unbounded growth? “We modify the expression of a certain gene – or rather, the information contained within it – so that the plant’s flowering is delayed,” explains Prüfer. Researchers then insert the modified gene back into the plant using a bacterium. The role of the bacterium is to act as a sort of shuttle service for the modified gene.

             ႂကြက္ေတြကို ဘုရားေက်ာင္းက တာ၀န္ရွိသူေတြက ထိန္း သိမ္းေစာင့္ေရွာက္ထားၿပီး တကယ္ လို႔ ကိုယ့္ ေၾကာင့္ ႂကြက္တစ္ေကာင္ ေသဆံုးသြားပါက အစားသေဘာ ျပန္ေလ်ာ္တဲ့အေနနဲ႔ ဘုရား ေက်ာင္းက ေရာင္းခ်တဲ့ ေရႊ (သို႔) ေငြနဲ႔ ျပဳ လုပ္ထားတဲ့ ႂကြက္ ႐ုပ္တု ေတြကို ၀ယ္ယူ ရမယ္ လို႔ စည္းကမ္းခ်က္ ထုတ္ျပန္ ထား ပါတယ္။

Female paedophile, 21, is jailed for two years after she had sex with an eight-year-old boy 50 times, starting when she was 16

 

A female paedophile has been jailed for having sex with an eight-year-old boy more than fifty times.
Loren Morris, 21, was 16 when she first slept with the schoolboy, who cannot be identified, and continued until he was ten years old.
Morris, who has a child of her own, would have regular intercourse with the boy, now 14, and was only found out after he was overheard bragging about it at school.
A judge today gave Morris a two-year prison sentence at Worcester Crown Court, following a trial last month where she was convicted of three counts of sexual intercourse with a child under 16.
She could be seen smiling and smoking outside the court today as she awaited her sentence.
The judge in the case told Morris that he would be lenient with the sentence - which will see her released from jail after one year - because she 'realised it was wrong' and stopped having sex with the boy.
West Mercia police said they started investigating Morris in March last year after the boy's school told them that he had been heard bragging about having sex with her.
Judge Robert Juckes QC said: 'I make no secret of the fact your case has given me cause for much consideration.
'I have come to the conclusion that due to the concern and embarrassment caused to both you and your family that you will not be offending again, let alone committing sexual offences.
'I am also aware of the effect this will have on your baby. I am pleased to hear your parents have started to build bridges with you.

Croc-zilla: First picture of the 22ft-long monster that terrorised Australian community 

Even Crocodile Dundee would think twice before tackling this monster.
At 22ft from its snout to the tip of its tail, it's as long as a truck and terrorised locals in a remote Aboriginal community in Australia's Northern Territory.
Fortunately for them it is now dead, having been shot by farmers whose cattle and goats it kept attacking. But the bad news is that two more giant crocodiles are believed to be still in the area – and could be even bigger than this one.
This picture, showing a little girl examining the dead reptile, has been circulating on the internet for some time but its origins have always been unclear.
Now, however, a man has claimed it was killed by members of his farming family at Manangoora, around 600 miles south-west of Darwin, in 1997.
Jeida Francis said: 'It was massive. This one was getting nasty and too close. It was attacking our cattle.'
The crocodile weighed so much it took two powerful Toyota 4x4s to pull it from the Wearyan River.
The remaining two crocodiles are thought to still be alive - and have grown to the same size as this gargantuan 22ft monster.
