MANCHESTER, England — Sir Alex Ferguson expects Antonio Valencia to return to action for Manchester United as soon as February following the winger's ankle surgery.

The Ecuador international, 25, suffered a dislocated and fractured ankle, as well as ligament damage, in the goalless draw with Rangers in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Ferguson had initially feared that the former Wigan player's season was over and compared Valencia's injury to that suffered by Alan Smith at Liverpool in 2006.

But, following his operation,that United have now confirmed that Valencia suffered a clean break and could be on the sidelines for only five months.

The United manager thinks that the likes of Nani, Ryan Giggs, Ji-Sung Park, Gabriel Obertan and Bebe will provide adequate cover for the injured right winger.

Ferguson feels that Valencia has the right mentality to battle his way back to fitness and will not be affected psychologically.

The United manager said: "The topic from Tuesday night about Antonio is that it's been resolved in that he's had his operation, it's been successful. The break was clean which we're delighted about.

"That was a major concern for us at the time and the ligament damage will mean that, although you're never 100 percent accurate in these situations with a bad injury, we're looking at the end of February, which is better than we thought on Tuesday night.

"He's a strong boy and he's very positive about it. Being positive helps you in these situations so we're very hopeful we'll get him back.

"He had a great season last season and he was a great signing for us. He's been improving all the time and he's a young player.

"It's a blow losing good players but in the context of the kind of squad we have, we should cope with it and we have a strong squad.

"You always feel that when you have a good player out of your team it is a loss but it shouldn't be a massive loss, a loss you can't cope with.

"Having players like Nani, Giggs, Ji-Sung Park, Obertan and Bebe, there are options there and hopefully we can cope with it."

Ferguson will decide whether to keep Rio Ferdinand in his team for Sunday's game against Liverpool after the defender came through his first United game of the season following a knee problem in the summer.

He added: "That was positive. He acquitted himself well and he had a good appetite for it. He was very positive in his game which is good and we'll see how he recovers because it was his first game for quite a while.

"No matter that he didn't have a lot to do, he still had to play 90 minutes."

While Ferguson has previously been critical of the way the fixtures have fallen, he insists it will not work to his advantage this weekend. United played Rangers on Tuesday, while Liverpool beat Steaua Bucharest 4-1 in the Europa League on Wednesday.

He said: "You can get breaks like that. The first game of the season we played on the Monday after the internationals so we look to take advantage of that.

"But Liverpool rested players against Steaua anyway so it doesn't really matter in respect to the fitness of both teams. Both will be well prepared for the game."

Ferguson has also confirmed that Dimitar Berbatov will start Sunday's game after being rested for the Rangers match.

The Bulgarian has often received heavy criticism since joining in a 30.75 million pounds deal from Tottenham two years ago, but has scored four goals this season.

Ferguson added: "Not everyone's questioned him. He has a lot of admirers, particularly at this club.

"The situation is that when we buy a player for a lot of money there's more focus on him and if they have a bad game, they get criticism that other players would not get.

"He's had some terrific games for us, marvellous games, and I told him to dismiss the press. I think he worried about himself.

"But he's expressed himself very well this season, he's enjoying his football and he'll play on Sunday."

Real Madrid footballer and gay icon Cristiano Ronaldo has been spotted partying with gay former *NSYNC star Lance Bass.

The pair were photographed dining out together in Tribeca, New York’s gay district, last Friday night.

Ronaldo, 25, arrived in New York with his girlfriend Irinia Shayk, 24, but went out without her to enjoy the city with Bass, 31.

Bass came out in 2006 after years of gossip about his sexuality.

A source told the Daily Star: “They were having a ball. Cristiano seemed very happy.

“Lance looked like the cat with the cream to be up close and personal with a hunk lusted after by the gay community.”

The footballer recently became a father, although he raised eyebrows by opting to have the child, also named Cristiano, with a surrogate mother.

The child is said to be in Portugal being cared for by Ronaldo's family.

Ronaldo's love of fashion, accessories and grooming has made him the subject of gay rumours in the past and he has been voted a gay icon by several publications.

However, he has shrugged off the adulation, saying: “I’m at ease with my sexuality so it’s not a problem for me.”

He recently commended Portugal's decision to allow gay marriage, saying: “As I am Portuguese, I try to keep myself informed about what is happening in my country.

"We must respect the choices of each other, because, after all, all citizens should have the same rights and responsibilities.”

Octopus Paul given honorary citizenship

Paul, the psychic octopus, was awarded honorary citizenship of the Spanish town of Carballino on Thursday, after correctly predicting Spain’s win in the World Cup final.

The mayor of the northwestern Spanish town, Carlos Montes, travelled to Germany where he presented the Oberhausen Sea Life aquarium with a silver plaque and a replica statue of its best-known cephalopod.

Paul also received a sumptuous meal of mussel meat and was given a friendly stroke.

“He was very trusting and enjoyed being stroked,” a Spanish spokesman said.

Paul obtained near cult-like status during the World Cup and his predictions were broadcast live in the later stages of the tournament in South Africa. He was spot-on in his predictions of all seven Germany games and also got Spain’s win over the Netherlands in the July 11 final right.

Carballino has invited Paul to take part in a large octopus celebration in early August. But he will stay put in Germany, despite five-figure purchase bids from around the world.

Original Composer Of Waka Waka

Waka Waka Its Time for Africa may be made popular by Shakira and Freshlyground but the song is a cover of the original released in 1986. The original song is titled "Tsamina" or "Zangaléwa" by a Cameroon group called Golden Sounds.

The original song is still popular as a marching song or song of victory. Most of the Golden Sounds Band members themselves being former soldiers, produced the original song as a tribute to African soldiers who fought in the Second World War. Shakira's Waka Waka is also a song of victory and a tribute to both the African continent and to footballers participating in the tournament.

Psychic octopus Paul predicts Spain to beat Holland in World Cup final

The octopus said to have psychic powers after predicting all of Germany's six World Cup games correctly, has had his say regarding the final in Johannesburg on Sunday – and it is good news for Spain. The two-year-old cephalopod, called Paul and based at the Sea Life Aquarium in the western German city of Oberhausen, decided that Spain would win the final by going for the mussel in the box with a Spanish flag rather than the one with a Dutch flag on it.

Before that, he had predicted that Germany will emerge victorious from their third-place play-off against Uruguay tomorrow night.

"Paul is such a professional oracle he doesn't even care that hundreds of journalists are watching and commenting on every move he makes," said Stefan Porwoll, the Sea Life Aquarium manager. "We're so proud of him."

The Weymouth-born octopus has become an international celebrity after picking the winner in each of Germany's World Cup games in South Africa, including the surprise defeat against Serbia in the group stage and the loss to Spain in the semi-final.
