First ice cream truck exclusively for dogs opens in London's Regent Park

Maybe they'll call it a cold dog.

The world's first ice cream truck exclusively for four-legged friends will open in London's Regent Park on Saturday.

The red, white, and blue truck, dubbed 'K99,' will dish (and cone) up a variety of pup-friendly flavors like "Dog Eat Hog World," a concoction of cured leg of pork and chicken. Then there's the classic "Canine Cookie Crunch," which is vanilla ice cream topped off with dog biscuits.

The truck will open for a "pet party" in the park.

"The weather has been so hot, we thought dogs deserved a cooling treat as much as anyone else," said event organizer Sally Bezant.

The K99 vehicle will roam in parks throughout the summer. Instead of the traditional Mr. Softee jingle, K99 will play the theme song from Scooby Doo, according to London's Daily Mail.

A number of pet nutritionists tested out the flavors to find the tastiest and safest flavors. And yes, the ice cream is safe for humans.

Bezant added the average Brit consumes an average of 50 servings of ice cream each year.

"All the while, man's best friend has to make do with a bowl of water to cool down. And, with 10.5 million dogs in the UK, that's a lot of pets missing out.'

Two Moons on August 27

Some things never go out of style, and this "Mars Spectacular" message is one of them. It's yet another example of a widely-circulated e-mail containing information that was once true but which continues to be forwarded around year after year, long after the information it contains has become outdated.

Mars did make an extraordinarily close approach to Earth several years ago, culminating on 27 August 2003, when the red planet came within 35 million miles (or 56 million kilometers) of Earth, its nearest approach to us in almost 60,000 years. At that time, Mars appeared approximately 6 times larger and 85 times brighter in the sky than it ordinarily does. (The earlier message quoted above was often reproduced with an unfortunate line break in the middle of the third sentence of the second paragraph, leaving some readers with the mistaken impression that Mars would "look as large as the full moon to the naked eye" without realizing that the statement only applied to those viewing Mars through a telescope with 75-power magnification.)

Although Mars' proximity to Earth in August 2003 (referred to as a
perihelic opposition) was a rare occurrence, the red planet comes almost as near to us every 15 to 17 years. To the unaided observer, Mars' appearance in August 2003 wasn't significantly larger or brighter than it is during those much more common intervals of closeness.

Mars had another close encounter with Earth in in 2005, but that occurrence took place in October (not August), and the red planet appeared about 20% smaller than it did during similar circumstances in 2003. Mars also made a close approach to Earth in December 2007, but even then it was still about 55 million miles away from us, not nearly as close as it was in 2003 or 2005. Not until 2018 will our view of Mars be similar to the one that was available in 2003, and it won't be until the year 2287 that Mars will come closer to Earth than it did back in 2003.

As Texas astronomer Torvald Hessel observed in a 2006 interview about the perennial "Mars Spectacular" message:
Q: What's the truth?

A: Mars gets close to Earth every two years. So, last year, Mars was very close. Three years ago, it was spectacularly close ... And right now, I'm sad to say, Mars is actually behind the Sun; we can't see it at all.

Q: How wide spread is this falsehood?

A: People get excited about it, start to send e-mail ... and every August we see this e-mail coming back and I get a lot of e-mails about it, of course.

2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End?

Remember the Y2K scare? It came and went without much of a whimper because of adequate planning and analysis of the situation. Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice.

Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline. Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that we're frequently asked regarding 2012.

Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.
Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?
A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Q: Could a phenomena occur where planets align in a way that impacts Earth?
A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. Q: Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction?
A: Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles.

Q: What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the earth’s crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours?
A: A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-shift to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. A magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia, anyway.

Q: Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012?
A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA NEO Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.

Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of pending doomsday?
A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.

Q: Is there a danger from giant solar storms predicted for 2012?
A: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history.

Cristiano Ronaldo parties with gay singer Lance Bass

Real Madrid footballer and gay icon Cristiano Ronaldo has been spotted partying with gay former *NSYNC star Lance Bass.

The pair were photographed dining out together in Tribeca, New York’s gay district, last Friday night.

Ronaldo, 25, arrived in New York with his girlfriend Irinia Shayk, 24, but went out without her to enjoy the city with Bass, 31.

Bass came out in 2006 after years of gossip about his sexuality.

A source told the Daily Star: “They were having a ball. Cristiano seemed very happy.

“Lance looked like the cat with the cream to be up close and personal with a hunk lusted after by the gay community.”

The footballer recently became a father, although he raised eyebrows by opting to have the child, also named Cristiano, with a surrogate mother.

The child is said to be in Portugal being cared for by Ronaldo's family.

Ronaldo's love of fashion, accessories and grooming has made him the subject of gay rumours in the past and he has been voted a gay icon by several publications.

However, he has shrugged off the adulation, saying: “I’m at ease with my sexuality so it’s not a problem for me.”

He recently commended Portugal's decision to allow gay marriage, saying: “As I am Portuguese, I try to keep myself informed about what is happening in my country.

"We must respect the choices of each other, because, after all, all citizens should have the same rights and responsibilities.”

Octopus Paul given honorary citizenship

Paul, the psychic octopus, was awarded honorary citizenship of the Spanish town of Carballino on Thursday, after correctly predicting Spain’s win in the World Cup final.

The mayor of the northwestern Spanish town, Carlos Montes, travelled to Germany where he presented the Oberhausen Sea Life aquarium with a silver plaque and a replica statue of its best-known cephalopod.

Paul also received a sumptuous meal of mussel meat and was given a friendly stroke.

“He was very trusting and enjoyed being stroked,” a Spanish spokesman said.

Paul obtained near cult-like status during the World Cup and his predictions were broadcast live in the later stages of the tournament in South Africa. He was spot-on in his predictions of all seven Germany games and also got Spain’s win over the Netherlands in the July 11 final right.

Carballino has invited Paul to take part in a large octopus celebration in early August. But he will stay put in Germany, despite five-figure purchase bids from around the world.

CUSTOMS officials at Mexico City's airport today detained a Peruvian man carrying 18 baby monkeys, including two which had died, hidden under his clothes, federal police said.

"The Titi monkeys were found hidden in a band tied around the man's body," a statement said.

The discovery was made when the 38-year-old man appeared edgy during random checks on passengers off a flight from Lima, Peru, it said.

Titi monkeys - found in Central and South America - are protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.

Woman Could Lose 'World's Largest Breasts' to Infection

The breast implants that earned a Texas woman the coveted title of “World’s Largest Breasts” now have landed her in a hospital, fearing for her life.

Sheyla Hershey is no stranger to plastic surgery, claiming she has had more than 30 procedures. But her last breast augmentation in pursuit of claiming the largest breasts in the world has given her a dangerous staph infection in both breasts.

Hershey’s doctors told her they are concerned the infection could spread to her bloodstream, meaning those 38KKK breasts could cost the 30-year-old Brazilian model her life.
Dr. Jennifer Walden, a plastic surgeon and clinical instructor of plastic surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center, says that with each breast reportedly holding more than a gallon of silicone, it is no surprise that Hershey is suffering complications.

“We can see now with this infection that the point is, [this surgery] isn’t possible — she ended up getting implants that were abnormally large for her frame. The body is not able to support this tissue stretch,” Walden told FoxNews.com.

While looking at a picture of Hershey, one can only wonder, even with modern medicine, how this was possible.

With more than nine breast augmentations under her belt, Hershey’s breast pockets have been expanded a little more each time, and bigger implants have been squeezed in—which is where the problem is rooted.

“With a staph infection, she probably had an opening called a dehiscence; where there is so much pressure the incision will just open up. You can see the implant poking through the skin, and bacteria enter into breast pocket,” Walden said.

Walden said these are the types of problems commonly seen with overly large implants. Breast surgeries with implants of this proportion would never be permitted in the United States, due to federal requirements and regulations, but Hershey was able to get the surgery in Brazil.

“The whole situation is unfortunate for her because it has become a real medical problem. It’s also unfortunate for the doctors in Brazil because it is not safe for a patient,” she said.

A staph infection is not the only problem Hershey could have encountered with her implants.

“The implants would begin to sag on her chest, and they would likely cause her upper back and neck problems in time. She could have mobility issues, I would imagine, that interfere with activities of daily life,” she said.

Because of the infected tissue resulting from the staph infection, Hershey may end up with smaller breasts than she had when she started having augementations.

“She has gone from the woman with the biggest implants in the world to likely someone who is going to have to have something similar to a mastectomy to remove infected and irrefutably damaged breast tissue,” Walden said.

The Tooth Relic Pagoda is a new pagoda constructed by the Buddhists of China for the enthronement of a Holy Tooth of Shakyamuni Buddha. It is located at the original site of the Ling-guang Monastery, the second of the well-known eight scenic spots of the Western Hills in the suburbs of Beijing. This Holy Tooth was preserved in China for more than 1,500 years.



According to Buddhist historical records, after the Buddha’s Nirvana, his body was cremated, and his two remaining teeth were discovered in the ashes. One of them was taken to Sri Lanka, the other one to the ancient kingdom of Udayana (in present Pakistan), and from Udyana it was brought to Kotan (present Hetian county of Xinjiang in China).

During the 5th century, a Chinese monk from the Southern Qi dynasty named Fa-xian (424-498 A.D.) traveled to Khotan and brought the Holy Tooth back to Nanjing, which was then the Southern Qi capital. Following the reunification of China under the Sui dynasty, the Holy Tooth Relic was sent to the new capital Chang-an. During the period of the Five Dynasties, the Tooth Relic was moved from place to place until it reached Yenjing (present-day Beijing) of the Liao dynasty in the North.

The “Chronicle of Emperor Dao-zong” in the History of the Liao Dynasty, Vol. XXII, contains a record relating the enshrinement of the Buddha’s Tooth Relic in the Zhao-xian Pagoda in the 8th month of the 7th year of Xian-yong (1071 A.D.). This is how the Shakyamuni Buddha’s Tooth Relic came to Beijing.

The Ling-guang Monastery, enclosing the Zhao-xian Pagoda, was founded in the 8th century; and the pagoda, which was an octagonal brick construction of ten stories, was built at the southeast corner of the premises. Because the bricks bore stamped images of Buddhas and pagodas, this pagoda was generally known as the “Pagoda with Images of One thousand Buddhas”. The Ling-guang Monastery in Beijing was a famous place for tourists for several centuries.

In 1900, the allied forces of eight imperialist counties invaded Beijing, and their atrocious acts of burning and plundering caused enormous destruction. Even though the Ling-guang Monastery and the Zhao-xian Pagoda were situated far away in the suburbs, they were, nevertheless, reduced to ruins with gun-fire. After the war, when clearing the ruins, the monks from the monastery found in the basement of the pagoda a stone casket in which the Tooth Relic was preserved. In the casket there was a sandal wood box on which were written the words: “The Holy Tooth Relic of Shakyamuni Buddha, written by Shan-hui on the 23rd day of the 4th month in the 7th year of Tien-hui.” Fortunately, the stone structure called “dew-basin”, originally set on the top of the pagoda, still remains intact.

In 1957 the Buddhists of China decided to construct a new pagoda according to Chinese Buddhist tradition for the purpose of providing a sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site for the worship of the Holy Tooth, as well as for restoring the magnificence of this famous historical site. From the summer of 1958 till the spring of 1964, the construction work for the splendid new pagoda, including its accessory buildings, was completed.

With a height of 51 meters, the Tooth Relic Pagoda is an octagonal building decorated with thirteen layers and rests on a spacious platform 22 meters square and 2.70 meters above the ground. The Pagoda incorporates modern architectural techniques in structure while preserving the traditional style of classical Chinese Buddhist pagodas with minor modifications and developments. Externally, it takes the form of a single-story building with closely arranged layers, as was popular in north China during the Tang and Song dynasties.

Psychic octopus Paul predicts Spain to beat Holland in World Cup final

The octopus said to have psychic powers after predicting all of Germany's six World Cup games correctly, has had his say regarding the final in Johannesburg on Sunday – and it is good news for Spain. The two-year-old cephalopod, called Paul and based at the Sea Life Aquarium in the western German city of Oberhausen, decided that Spain would win the final by going for the mussel in the box with a Spanish flag rather than the one with a Dutch flag on it.

Before that, he had predicted that Germany will emerge victorious from their third-place play-off against Uruguay tomorrow night.

"Paul is such a professional oracle he doesn't even care that hundreds of journalists are watching and commenting on every move he makes," said Stefan Porwoll, the Sea Life Aquarium manager. "We're so proud of him."

The Weymouth-born octopus has become an international celebrity after picking the winner in each of Germany's World Cup games in South Africa, including the surprise defeat against Serbia in the group stage and the loss to Spain in the semi-final.

Same-Sex Marriage Becomes Legal in Iceland; Prime Minister Gets Married

Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir married writer Jonina Leosdottir on Sunday, the first day of legal same-sex marriage in Iceland.

Sigurdardottir, who has children from a previous heterosexual marriage, is the world’s only openly gay prime minister but her sexuality has never been an issue in Iceland, which, like the other Nordic states, has a history of tolerance.

The marriage makes Sigurdardottir the first government leader in the world to enter a same-sex marriage. Iceland’s Parliament voted unanimously to approve same-sex marriage earlier this month.

Three cheers for equality and congratulations to the Prime Minister and her new wife!

မင္းသားႀကီး Park Yong-ha ကို ေနအိမ္မွာ မိမိ ကိုယ္ မိမိ သတ္ေသၿပီးး ေသဆံုး ေနတာကို ယေန႔ နံနက္ (30th June 2010) ေတြ႔ရွိ ခဲ့ရလို႔ အႏုပညာ ပရိသတ္ ႀကီး တစ္ရပ္လံုး အံ့ၾသ တုန္လွဳပ္ သြားခဲ့ ပါတယ္။

မေန႔ ညေန ( (29th June 2010) မွာ Park Yong-ha ဟာ မၾကာမွီ ရိုက္ေတာ့ မဲ့ Love Song - Drama အတြက္ producer နဲ႔ ခ်ိန္းထား ေရာက္ မလာ ခဲ့ပါ။ မန္ေနဂ်ာ မွ မင္းသား နဲ႔ ဆက္သြယ္လို႔ မရခဲ့ဘူး လို႔လည္း သိရ ပါတယ္။

Park Yong-ha discovered dead at home
Park Yong-ha was discovered dead at his Nonhyun-dong, Seoul, home on the morning of June 30. I’ll update with details if/as they become available.

I am in utter shock. WHAT?

Park Yong-ha died at the age of 32, having debuted fifteen years ago in youth shows like KBS’s 1995 Love Blossoms in the Classroom and 1996’s Start. He shot to fame with 2002’s Winter Sonata, which made him a household name and a “Hallyu star.” He used that fame as a springboard a singing career in Japan, where he enjoyed quite a lot of popularity. He had a successful drama hit in 2008’s On Air, and totally stole my heart in 2009’s Story of a Man, which is one of my favorite dramas EVER.

Most recently, Park Yong-ha was cast alongside Yoon Eun-hye in the high-profile drama remake of Hong Kong film Tian Mi Mi, tentatively titled Love Song.

This is just… awful. Horrible and unexpected. Currently they are not ruling this a suicide, but that’s the foremost presumption.

UPDATE

* The evening prior to his death (29th), Park missed a meeting with drama producers for his upcoming project Love Song. His manager couldn’t get in contact with him.
* One producer said that they had seen Park occasionally in a down mood, but attributed it to news of Park’s father suffering from cancer. His father recently moved back home from the hospital after his stomach cancer was deemed late-stage.
* Park reportedly died from hanging. He was found by his mother in his room with a cell phone cord around his neck.
* Around 12:40 am, he was with his father, massaging his father’s legs. Park told him “I’m sorry” over and over. He then went into his room, where he was found in the morning.
* Producers of Love Song are “in panic mode” because Park’s passing leaves them without a lead. Yeah, eff you producers.
* Park had said in an interview that he suffered from depression, which was exacerbated by prolonged promotional activities abroad.
* One friend says, “There’s no way to know the real reason, but when I met Park a few months ago, he seemed depressed.” His father’s illness made things worse.
* Park’s Story of a Man co-star Park Shi-yeon (currently acting in Coffee House) reportedly received a “huge shock” from the news and “is in very bad condition.” She is so distraught that there’s concern she won’t be able to continue filming.
* Park Shi-yeon spoke with Park on the phone yesterday, but thought he sounded normal.
* And the media frenzy begins. That photo is from outside Park’s home.
* The parade of celebrity visits is also just beginning, with stars coming to pay their respects to Park, whose body was transferred to a Kangnam hospital. It’s morning in Korea now, and this will likely continue all day. I won’t be posting on it, but you can rest assured there’ll be plenty of media there as well.
* His death is even more perplexing because he had made plans to meet friends later in the day.
* Park’s last phone call (or one of his last) was reportedly with DBSK’s Hero Jaejoong, with whom he’d grown closer as he gave the latter advice about pursuing singer activities in Japan. Jaejoong is currently recording in the U.S. and said, “I spoke with him on the phone yesterday, and his voice sounded so bright. I didn’t feel he was at all different from his normal self. We agreed to have a drink together when I got back to Korea. I’m in such shock.”
* Park’s last twitter message was posted Saturday the 26th (http://twitter.com/yonaaaaaa) and was about the World Cup. “We lost. But they did well. clap clap clap~ Everyone, let’s clap with warm hears for our national soccer team, who return with heavy steps. Good job!!”
* Park had just come back from a tour in Japan. The day before that (the 25th), he tweeted, “How could they know to come to the airport and see me, and at such a late hour? ^^ I didn’t tell anyone but how could they know? keke. Impressive~ Anyway, thank you for coming to see me!! Tomorrow at the concert I’ll have to ask, ‘Who came to the airport yesterday?~~’ keke See you tomorrow ^^”
* In an interview last year while promoting his movie The Scam, Park said, “I’ve suffered from insomnia for the last ten years. I’m rather sensitive. If something bothers me I can’t sleep until it’s resolved.” He added, “I’m envious of people who can sleep well. I think sleep is needed for good mental health.”

Actor-singer Rain and actress Jeon Ji-hyun have denied reports they are dating and their management companies are threatening to take legal action against the tabloid that published the report earlier this month.

Speculation about the couple began when the tabloid Sports Seoul reported on June 10 that the two had been dating since October 2009. According to the report, which was accompanied by photos of the couple, the two stars met frequently at Jeon’s apartment.

The stars’ respective management companies have refuted the report and both have talked about taking legal action against the tabloid for infringement of privacy.

On the day the report was published, Jeon’s management company, Sidus HQ, said that the couple is not dating. The company also said that reports that the two have matching accessories - a ring and a bracelet - is only true in so far as the accessories are of the same brand.

Also that day, Rain’s management company, JTune Entertainment, issued a press release saying that Rain’s ring was from his family and that he was near Jeon’s apartment building because he was visiting a friend of his who lives there.
