'Ocean-like' ice in space scan shows that Earth's life-giving oceans might have ridden in on a comet's tail

Today, most of Earth's surface is covered in water - but scientists believe Earth's oceans didn't form until around eight million years after the planet itself.
The discovery of 'ocean-like' water on a comet by the HiFi instrument on the Herschel Space Observatory hints that Earth's oceans might have arrived in the form of comet ice.
If so, the impacts (we'd have needed quite a few) would have formed an important stage in the evolution of life on Earth.

'Life would not exist on Earth without liquid water, and so the questions of how and when the oceans got here is a fundamental one,' said University of Massachussetts astronomy professor Ted Bergin, 'It's a big puzzle and these new findings are an important piece.'
Previous scans of comets led astronomers to believe that the icy bodies could not have brought water to Earth - or at least were only responsible for a very small fraction of it.

HiFi, the Heterodyne Instrument for the Infrared on the Hershel Space Observatory, detected a familiiar, 'ocean-like' composition to the  water on the comet Hartley 2 - a comet that had been 'visited' at a distance of 700km by NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft.
By ocean-like, of course, the astronomers don't mean that it is green and swimming with fish.

Hartley-2 is frozen solid in the cold of deep space - the comet is composed of chunks of water ice and frozen carbon dioxide.
Using measurements from the infrared telescope, the researchers found that the ice on a comet called Hartley 2 has similar chemical compositions to our oceans - judging by the mix of 'normal' hydrogen atoms and deuterium atoms, one of the chemical isotopes found in heavy water.
It is the first time ocean-like water has been detected in a comet. Bergin admits, 'We were all surprised.'

HiFi has previously scanned six other comets - but none had 'Earth-like' water. The astronomers hypothesised that Hartley-2 formed nearer Earth than the other six - in our solar system's Kuiper belt, and the 'different' asteroids formed 5,000 times further away, in the distant Oort Cloud.
The scans of other comets led astronomers to speculate that comets could not have been the source of Earth's water.
The source of earth's oceans has been a subject for debate among astronomers for decades - and there are various competing theories, from chemical processes in the cooling Earth to asteroid impacts. Now, though, it seems comets might have brought the life-giving substance to Earth - in just the right mixture for early life to thrive.

Sex, love now compulsory varsity course in China

Beijing, Sep 15 (IANS) A mental health course that would include topics on sex and love has been made compulsory for university students in China to help them ‘deal with pressures and frustrations in life’, the education ministry has said.
The ministry had asked universities across the nation to develop a mental health course in June and has made it compulsory from this month, a ministry official told China Daily.
Though such courses had been developed in the past, they were mainly optional courses, the official said.
‘The reason why the ministry decided to make the courses compulsory was that most university students are being advised to seek help or seek psychological guidance because of the heavy pressure on them,’ he said.
An 18-year-old medical science freshman at Peking University said such courses are very popular among new students.
‘The psychological courses, which introduce some sex and procreation knowledge are popular, but they have been optional up till now,’ she said.
Some students, however, think there was no reason to make the course compulsory.
A business administration major student at Peking University, who selected a psychological course, said it was boring and was of no help to her.
‘Not all students need this kind of education. After all, we are university students, most of us know about sex and love,’ said her boyfriend, also a student.

Devon James — the Florida porn star who claimed Tiger Woods was the father of her 9-year-old son — has sold a sex tape of her and the golfer to a DVD production company, RadarOnline reported Friday.

"We made a deal with a DVD production company," her husband, Nick James, said.

"We're going to sell the video online and we get half the profits of all sales."

Nick James said he and his wife met with a pornography studio in Los Angeles this week, but the company backed off from a deal because it was "scared of the Tiger lawyers."

"Ultimately, we found a different company, and they gave us $350,000 down with projected sales of $5 million total once it's out," he said.

He said a website featuring a teaser of the sex tape will be launched in a couple of weeks.

"If you pre-book buying the tape you get it on Nov. 15, otherwise, it comes out for sale on the 20th," Nick James said.

Devon James, whose real name is Melinda Janette, said the tape was made in 2008 and is 62 minutes long with 37 minutes of her and Woods having sex.

"It's going to be the bomb," she said.

In June, James alleged the now-divorced golfer was the father of her 9-year-old son and filed a claim for him to submit a DNA test. She said she met Woods while attending a Christian school program at age 19.

Alleged mistresses

Here are some of the women with whom Tiger was allegedly intimate.

But in August, the paternity case against Woods by the 29-year-old alleged mistress was thrown out by a Florida judge — as James failed to appear in court and because the adult-film star does not even have custody of the child in question. The child is currently in the custody of James' mother.

Her mother, Sandra Brinling, has described her daughter as a "pathological liar."

"[My daughter is] only out to lie, steal and cheat," Brinling told Radar in June. "All she is looking for is to get money from [Woods]."

Brinling has also expressed doubt as to whether the sex tape exists.

114-year-old man celebrating birthday

A Montana resident believed to be the world's oldest man is celebrating his 114th birthday.

 

Walter Breuning plans to attend an invitation-only birthday party on Tuesday afternoon at the Rainbow Retirement Community in downtown Great Falls.

He is expected to have cake and deliver a speech at the party that will include Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer and representatives from Guinness World Records.

Breuning was born on Sept. 21, 1896, in Melrose, Minn., and moved to Montana in 1918. He worked for the Great Northern Railway for 50 years.

His wife, Agnes, died in 1957. The couple had no children.

Rodial Boob Job Claims to Increase Breast Size by 8.4%: Effective or a Beauty Scam?

Is Rodial Boob Job a miracle cream that will help enlarge breast size or just another beauty scam that will empty a woman's wallet of a lot of cash? The manufacturer of Rodial Boob Job claims that use of the cream by  rubbing into the breasts, will increase breast size by up to one-half a cup size.

The Rodial Boob Job cream is supposed to work by raising the number of fat cells in the breast, notes the Daily Mail. Chemicals in the cream attract the fat cells to the area of the breast. This product contains, sarsasapogenin, myrrh resin, phytosterols, pentapeptides, and wheat proteins.

8.4% Increase in Breast Size?

Women who want to increase the breast size are told to rub the cream into the breasts twice daily after meals for a straight 56 days. The Boob Job product claims it will firm breasts, increase the breast size by 8.4 percent, lift the breasts and increase smoothness of the breast skin.

Will this product work? Only time will tell as reviews are done. But one has to wonder, if the cream brings fat cells to the breasts, than will rubbing the cream in with the hands also cause fat cells to flock to the hands? Do plastic gloves need to be worn while using this product?

Cosmetic companies typically gouge women for high-priced lotions that have little if any effect. Is this product just another scam? Probably so. And it will probably be a huge success too, as women flock to buy it to fix their supposed flaws.

Love Your Natural Beauty

Natural beauty is the best. Just be happy with what you have and shoo away anyone who tries to convince you any part of your body is not okay as it was created. Wasting money on pricey beauty products that don't work is just sad.

Love and accept who you are. Life is just easier that way. I'd like to have back all the money I wasted on perms to give me curly hair when I was younger. What a colossal waste of money that ended up frying my hair badly. I had a stage where I kept my hair short to let it regain health after years of perms.

Woman admits setting fire to husband's genitals

A woman told a court in Australia on Monday that she set fire to her husband's genitals because she believed he was having an affair. The man later died of burn injuries.

Rajini Narayan, 46, told the South Australian Supreme Court in Adelaide, that she poured petrol on her husband, Satish Narayan, 47, and set him on fire, Australia's AAP news agency reported Monday.

Rajini had allegedly been subjected to 20 years of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her husband, but she still loved him and considered him as her "god".

Though she pleaded not guilty to the murder of her husband in 2008, the fire caused him 75 percent burns and he died in hospital a few weeks later.

Prosecutor Tim Preston said Rajini Narayan told her neighbours: "I did it. It wasn't an accident."

She also told the court her husband was having an affair and that she wanted to burn his genitals.

Police found at the crime scene printouts of emails from her husband to another woman.

Defence counsel Lindy Powell said even though she suffered at his hands, she still loved him. "More than loved him, she idolised him."

Rajini went to their bedroom with a container of petrol and a candle. As she approached him, she told him she had seen his emails and that she was going to burn his genitals and tell his family what he had done."

In response, Satish called her a fat, dumb bitch, Powell told the jury.

It was then that Rajini lost control and threw the petrol and the candle on his back.

'Titanic' actress Gloria Stuart dies aged 100

Thirties' leading lady found modern-day fame playing a shipwreck survivor in Cameron's 1997 movie

Actress Gloria Stuart, a leading lady in Hollywood in the 1930s who found modern-day fame playing a shipwreck survivor in 1997 movie "Titanic," has died, age 100.

Her daughter, Sylvia Thompson, told the Los Angeles Times that Stuart died Sunday night in her home in Los Angeles. She was diagnosed with breast cancer some five years ago, but had survived the disease.

"She just paid no attention to illness. She was a very strong woman and had other fish to fry," Thompson said.

Stuart was born July 4, 1910 in Santa Monica, California, and she studied drama and philosophy in college before starting her career in theater and later Hollywood movies.

She was a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild, the trade union that represents actors and actresses, and was under contract for Universal Studios and 20th Century in the 1930s.

Her early movie roles ranged widely from star turns in horror flicks such as "The Invisible Man" to playing opposite Shirley Temple in "Poor Little Rich Girl" and working in director Busby Berkeley's "Gold Diggers of 1935."

When her contract expired in the 1940s, she began to work less and less in films and later took up painting. Stuart retired from movies in 1946, then roughly 30 years later returned in TV movies and continued working into the 1980s.

It was director James Cameron's blockbuster "Titanic," which until 2009's "Avatar" was the highest-grossing movie of all time, that returned Stuart to stardom and earned her an Academy Award nomination at age 87 - the oldest actress ever nominated for an Oscar.

She played Old Rose, the counterpart of youthful passenger Rose (Kate Winslet) on the doomed ocean liner. Stuart's work helped frame the shipboard romance between the upper-class young Rose and working man Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio).

In her 1999 autobiography, "Gloria Stuart: I Just Kept Hoping," she wrote about the part that, "I knew the role I had wanted and waited for all these many years had arrived!"

After "Titanic," Stuart would work in a few more films and on television, but nothing would bring her a similar level of fame. She was married twice, to Blair Gordon Newell, from whom she was divorced in 1934, and to Arthur Sheekman, to whom she stayed married until he died in 1978.

    Since Google TV was announced, we have been waiting for some concrete products that will have the software. The Logitech Revue is nice, but for Google TV to really change the way we watch TV, it has to be imbedded into the actual TV you buy and not another set-top box. Sony has stepped up to the plate by teasing its Internet TV, which it proclaims as "the world's first HDTV incorporating the Google TV platform."

    Details on the specs of the TV itself are sparse, and any hint of a release date or price are also absent. However, it is probably safe to assume Sony would love to have this out for the holiday shopping season, and they had them on hand at Google IO last spring.                           လာမည့္ ၃ ႏွစ္အတြင္း ေနမွ ၾကီးမားလွေသာ စြမ္းအင္ ေပါက္ကြဲမႈၾကီးတစ္ခု ျဖစ္ေပၚလာျပီး ကမၻာၾကီးတစ္ခုလံုး ခ်ိနဲ႔ထိခိုက္ ဆံုးရံႈးမႈမ်ား ျဖစ္လာမည္ဟု မေန႔က သိပၸံပညာရွင္မ်ားက တရား၀င္ ေျပာၾကားလိုက္ျပီ ျဖစ္ေၾကာင္း ဆန္းသတင္းစာအရ သိရသည္။သိပၸံပညာရွင္မ်ား စိုးရိမ္ေနသည္မွာ ၾကီးမားလွေသာ ေန၏ ဆိုလာ အ၀န္းအ၀ိုင္းၾကီးသည္ ၂၀၁၃ ခုႏွစ္၌ ပ်ံကား ထြက္လာျပီး ကမၻာၾကီးတစ္ခုလံုးကို အဆံုးတုိင္ ၀ရုန္းသုန္းကား ျဖစ္မႈမ်ားကို ေပၚေပါက္ေစမည္ဟု ၾကိဳတင္ ခန္႔မွန္း ရျခင္းေၾကာင့္ ျဖစ္သည္။ ရာစုႏွစ္ တစ္ခုအတြင္း ေပၚေပါက္ခဲလွေသာ သဘာ၀ ေဘးအႏၱရာယ္ တစ္ခု ျဖစ္ျပီး စြမ္းအား ၾကီးမားလွေသာ အာကာသ အတြင္းမွ ေက်ာက္ အပိုင္းအျပတ္မ်ား တစ္စစီ ေၾကြမြ လြင့္ပ်ံလာျခင္းက ျဂိဳလ္တု ဆက္သြယ္ေရး စနစ္မ်ားကို ထိခိုက္ ပ်က္စီးေစျပီး ကမၻာေျမျပင္ တစ္ခုလံုးကိုလည္း ေျပာင္သလင္း ခါသြားေလာက္သည္အထိ ထိခိုက္မႈမ်ား ျဖစ္ေစမည့္ အျပင္ အက်ိဳးဆက္အျဖစ္ အစာေရစာမ်ား ရွာပါးလာျပီး အင္တာနက္ ဆက္သြယ္ေရးမ်ားသည္လည္း လံုး၀ ျပတ္ေတာက္သြားမည္ ျဖစ္သည္။

                   လူေနအိမ္မ်ားနွင့္ ဆက္စပ္ျပီး အိမ္သံုး ေရခဲ သတၱာမ်ားႏွင့္ ကားမ်ားမွာ ထိခိုက္မႈ အမ်ားဆံုး ျဖစ္လာႏုိင္သည္။ ယခု ျဖစ္ေပၚလာဖြယ္ ရွိသည့္ သဘာ၀ ေဘးအႏၱရာယ္ ဆိုးၾကီးမွာ ၁၈၅၉ ခုႏွစ္က တစ္ၾကိမ္ ျဖစ္ေပၚခဲ့ဖူးသည့္ သေဘာ၀ ေဘးအႏၱရာယ္ၾကီးႏွင့္ ထပ္တူညီ ပံုစံမ်ိဳး ျဖစ္လာမည္ဟု သံုးသပ္ေနၾကသည္။ ထိုစဥ္က မီးခိုးၾကြက္ေလ်ာက္ ပ်က္စီးဆံုးရံႈးမႈ အျဖစ္ ဥေရာပ ႏွင့္ အေမရိကတို႔ ဆက္သြယ္ထားေသာ တယ္လီဂရပ္ ၀ါယာမ်ားမွ တဆင့္ နီးစပ္ရာ ပတ္၀န္းက်င္မ်ားကို ေလာင္ကၽြမ္းပ်က္စီး ေစခဲ့ျခင္း ျဖစ္သည္။

                 ၂၀၁၂ ခုႏွစ္တြင္ ကမၻာပ်က္မည့္ေန႔ ဟူသည့္ ရုပ္ရွင္ဇာတ္လမ္းတြင္ တစ္ကမၻာလံုး အပူခ်ိန္ တုိးျမင့္လာျခင္းႏွင့္ အပူလႈိင္းသင့္မႈမ်ား ျဖစ္လာမည္ဟု မင္းသား John Cusack က သရုပ္ေဆာင္ ထားခဲ့သည္။ ကမၻာ ျဂိဳလ္ၾကီးသည္လည္း ေျမငလ်င္ ႏွင့္ လူသားတို႔၏ မဆင္မခ်င္မႈမ်ားေၾကာင့္ အၾကိမ္ၾကိမ္ ထိခိုက္ဒဏ္ရာ ရမႈမ်ား ၾကံဳေတြ႕ေနရသည္ဟု အဆိုပါ ဇာတ္ကားတြင္ ထင္ရွားေသာ စကားအျဖစ္ သံုးစြဲခဲ့သည္။

    Massive solar flare 'could paralyse Earth in 2013'


    A massive solar flare could cause global chaos in 2013, causing blackouts and wrecking satellite communications, a conference heard yesterday.

    Nasa has warned that a peak in the sun's magnetic energy cycle and the number of sun spots or flares around 2013 could generate huge radiation levels.

    The resulting solar storm could cause a geomagnetic storm on Earth, knocking out electricity grids around the world for hours, days, or even months, bringing much of normal life grinding to a halt.

    Defence Secretary Liam Fox, who delivered the keynote address at an international conference on the vulnerability of electricity grids around the world, warned that modern societies' dependence on technology leaves them vulnerable to such events.

    The Sun follows an 11-year cycle of high and low periods of solar activity. It is now leaving a notably quiet phase and scientists expect to see a sharp increase in the number of solar flares as well as unprecedented levels of magnetic energy.

    The rings of fire, which have the power of 100 hydrogen bombs, could cause twenty times more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina.

    Experts met in Washington DC in June to discuss how to protect Earth from the ferocious flares, which are expected sometime around 2013.

    Nasa is using dozens of satellites – including the Solar Dynamics Observatory – to study the threat.

    The problem was investigated in depth two years ago by the National Academy of Sciences, in a report which outlined the social and economic impacts of severe space weather events.

    It noted how people of the 21st-century rely on high-tech systems for the basics of daily life.

    Smart power grids, GPS navigation, air travel, financial services and emergency radio communications can all be knocked out by intense solar activity.

    But much of the damage could  be minimised if it was known in advance that the storm was approaching.

    Putting satellites in 'safe mode' and disconnecting transformers could  protect them from damaging electrical surges.

    Scientists are said to fear that a similar effect could be achieved by a hostile power exploding a nuclear weapon in space, producing a massive burst of electromagnetic energy known as a high altitude electromagnetic pulse.

    Mr Fox also  warned that countries seeking nuclear capabilities could use them in a different way to the traditional 'nuclear strike" method used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Second World War.

    This could involve a nuclear detonation in the upper atmosphere that would knock out vital electronic systems by producing an electro-magnetic pulse, he said.

    He warned that terrorists might also seek to employ similar methods as he urged the public to take greater heed of the threat.

    'I think it's a subject that we need to give a good deal more attention to, not least because we are in an era where there are those who seem to believe that we can choose to enter or not enter certain conflicts, and also because we live in a war where proliferation is becoming more not less the case,' the Defence Secretary said.

    'And when we are discussing North Korea or Iran, for example, people need to understand there are other risks than just what we would consider the sort of nuclear strike we saw in Nagasaki or Hiroshima.

    'The range of risks out there are many-fold and I think we need to make that extremely apparent to the public.'

    Dr Fox insisted that the threat of such an attack was 'low', but that the Government was working internationally with telecoms, energy and transport companies to increase resilience.

    'With reliance, for instance on technology, comes vulnerability, and vulnerability can invite attack,' he went on.

    'Our wider reliance on digital technologies will not have gone unnoticed among those who would mean us harm.

    'We will need to ensure that those same technological innovations that provide advantage do not become our Achilles heel.'
